    Bailey / Bayley

John Bayley (born 6 August 1826 Slaugham, Sussex) and married to Maria Feist - that was how his name appeared on the records, though his daughter Julia Maria's surname was spelt Bailey. Incumbents keeping the Church records would often spell phonetically instead of asking people how they spelt their name! The next two generations of Bailey/Bayleys had their name spelt Bailey and the next one (three back from John) had their name spelt Bailey again.

John Baily was Sue Amos' Great Great Grandfather.

    Sudden Death

Report in the Surrey Mirror, dated 29th October 1881.

‘SUDDEN DEATH.—An inquest was held at the Admiral, Nutley-lane, Reigate, on Thursday before Mr. William Russell, deputy coroner, touching the death of Arthur, a young fellow of 23, who died suddenly in the street at midnight, on the 24th October. Whilst on duty in the North Albert-road, P.C. Lovelace found the deceased lying on the footpath in a pool of blood, which was flowing from his mouth and nostrils. He at once blew his whistle, and obtained the assistance of Sergeant Richards and P.C. Lee, the latter of whom ran for a doctor. In a short time Mr. Stone's assistant was on the spot, but he pronounced the man dead. There were no external marks of violence on the body, nor anything to indicate that a struggle had taken place in the street. Medical evidence was adduced to show that the deceased had been suffering from consumption, and death doubtless resulted from a rupture of a blood vessel. The jury returned a verdict accordingly.’
