    Drunk and Refusing to Quit

    Report in the Surrey Mirror, 10th January 1880.
    'At the Magistrate's Clerk's Offoce, on Wednesday, before the Mayor (Mr. Councillor G.E. Pym), and the ex-Mayor (Mr. Alderman Lambert), a man named John Welch, was charged with being drunk and disorderly, and refusing to quit the licenced premises of Nutley Hall, Nutley-lane, on the previous day. Evidence was given bythe landlord of the house, and Sergt. Richards, showing thta about half-past four in the afternoon , prisoner went to the Nutley Hall , drunk, and asked for lodgings; he was told that he could not be accommodated and requested to leave the premises, which he refused to do. - Fined 6s. and 5s. costs; in default, seven days' imprisonment.'

    Mr Halsey Returning to his Trade

    Taken from the Surrey Mirror/Advertiser, Friday, January 25, 1918:

    "RETURNING TO HIS TRADE.

    The application of G. W. G. Halsey (33), licensed victualler and proprieter of the licensed lodging house, Nutley-lane, Reigate, was adjourned at the last sitting with a ciew of applicant finding work of national importance i nthe daytime, whereby he could be in charge of the lodging house in the evenings. He stated he had failed to find employment through the Labour Exchange, and at the local munition works. In his younger days he was a baker, and was now bread baking for Mr. Ince. - Three months' temporary exemption was granted (Mr. Ince did not adjudicate in this case)."

    Accident!

    Reported in the Surrey Mirror, 10th February 1899.

    A man named John Taylor of Nutley-lane, Reigate, was, on Saturday night, found by Police-constables Talbot and Lovelace lying neat the Market Hall with a fractured leg. The police ambulance was sent for, and the limb was, with the assistance of Inspector Jeffrey, bound up, and the man removed to the workhouse infirmary. Taylor stated that he had been tripped up by a man named Finch.

    Wilful Damage

    'Mr John Watkins, before the Mayor and the ex-Mayor, at the Magistrate's Clerk's Office, on Monday, was charged with breaking the glass in the front door of the Nutley Hall, Nutley Lane on Sunday night. The evidence of the landlord, Wm. Goodman, showed that the prisoner had been lodging at his house for three nights, and on Sunday a difference arising, prisoner demanded to have the money returned which he had paid for that night's lodging. He was denied and also refused to have liquor supplied to him. He went outside and deliberately broke the pane of glass in the front door and ran away. He was given into custody. The value of the glass was 5s. Prisoner was committed for 10 days' hard labout in default of paying a fine of 5s., damage 5s., and costs, 10s.'

    Trespass in Search of Game

    Report in the Mid Surrey Mirror, 21st August 1880.

    'William Chambers, of Nutley-lane, was summoned for trespassing in search of game, upon land in the possession of Mr. Joe Norris, at Reigate, on the 8th August.

    William Stevens, gamekeeper to Lord Monson said about quarter-past seven in the morning of Sunday, August 8th, he saw the defendant in some bushes, on Reigate Hill, looking about at rabbit's holes. He was a hundred yards awayfrom any footpath. He went to the defendant and asked him if he had any wires, and the defendant said no, but searching him he found three in his jacket pocket. He noticed on the spot where defendant was that there had been wiring there for sometime.

    In answer to the bench, Supt. Rogers said defendant had been several times summoned for poaching and different offences, but not within the last 18 months.

    Fined 10s. and 13s. 6d. costs, in default 10 days' hard labour; a week allowed for payment.'
