    A Boy Accidentally Shot

Report in the Mid Surrey Mirror, dated 24th April 1880.

'About four o'clock on Tuesday afternoon, in the North Albert-road, Nutley-lane, a little boy, eleven years of age, named Samuel Joseph Mendham, was accidentally shot in the face by a companion of about his own age, named Nye. The two boys, in company with others, were playing near their homes with an old-fashioned flink-lock pistol. Nye put a lucifer match into the lock, and pointing the weapon straight at the face of Mendham, who was distant about two yards only, pulled the trigger, and an explosion with a loud report followed, the lad receiving the full charge in his face. The poor boy, who fell to the ground, was picked up and carried to his home, and Dr. Steele was soon in attendance. He did not at first give much hopes of the little fellow's life, but after a very painful night some hopes are entertained, but it is still feared that he will lose the sight of his left eye, besides sustaining much disfigurement to his countenance. It appears that the pistol, which of course was not known to be loaded, has lain by in a corner for some time, and it was given to the boys to play with about a week ago.'
